Beatriz Chachamovits

Meet Beatriz

Beatriz, also goes by Chacha, is an environmental artist and educator from São Paulo, Brazil, living and working in Miami, Florida. Her work explores the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems through ceramic sculptures, drawings, and installations that merge natural history with speculative mythologies.

By highlighting the intricate forms of underwater life, she invites deeper reflection on our impact and responsibility toward ocean conservation. She is the author and illustrator of the book The Little Handbook of Marine Fishes and other Aquatic Marvels.

What is something that people would be surprised to hear about yourself?

I think people might be surprised to learn that before settling in Miami, I lived in Key West for six months, diving extensively with scientists to study the Florida reef tract. That time underwater shaped the way I approach my work toda, blending research with mythology to create a world where marine line and storytelling intersect.

How has the ocean influenced your life today?

The ocean is a constant presence in my life and work. My practice is deeply inspired by marine ecosystems, particularly South Florida's coral reefs, and I aim to create pieces that celebrate their beauty while also addressing the urgent environmental issues they face.

How can people get motivated to take batter care of our ocean? Is there something we can do on a daily basis to reduce our footprint?

People protect what they feel connected to, so finding ways to experience the ocean - whether through swimming, diving, or simply learning about marine life - can foster that bond.

On a daily basis, small choices add up: reducing single-use plastics, being mindful of the seafood we consume, and supporting conservation efforts all make a big difference.

What was the hardest wave you had to overcome?

Working with new materials and pushing my practice beyond its familiar boundaries has been both a challenge and necessity. Right now, I'm learning how to scale up my ceramics, which means stepping into unknown territory, like working with casted cement.

I see these moments of uncertainty as part of the process - like the ocean, they demand patience, adaptability, and trust.

What do you feel when you wear a piece of Carolina K?

I feel like I'm carrying a story - one woven with care, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for nature. There's an effortless elegance in Carolina K's designs that resonates with the way I approach my work: honoring the past while creating the future.

What is your favorite product from the brand?

I'm drawn to the intricate patterns Carolina K creates, especially those inspired by the artisans they collaborate with. There is something special about wearing a piece that carries the essence of traditional craftsmanship while feeling contemporary and timeless. The connection between art, culture, and sustainability in their designs resonates deeply with me.

Favorite place in Miami?

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Nature Center and Crandon Park. It's a place where I feel deeply connected to the natural landscape of South Florida. The mix of coastal ecosystems, history, and conservation efforts there makes it a special refuge in the city.

Name two things about your morning routine?

I always start my day with a moment of quiet - whether it's sketching, journaling, or simply being still. And coffee, always!

Your mantra

"Trust the process." Whether in the studio or in life, I remind myself to embrace the unknown and stay open to where the work leads me.
