Introducing our Fall/Winter '26 Artist Collaboration: Aliyah Tleukhanova, a textile artist, printmaker, and illustrator from Kazakhstan (Central Asia). Working with traditional Kazakh crochet embroidery, she reinterprets ancestral techniques through a contemporary lens. Her practice explores Kazakh identity and ornamental traditions, creating works that honor cultural heritage while speaking to the present.
Äliyah's practice is rooted in ecosophy, fostering a living connection between nature, culture, and future generations. She views traditional Kazakh ornament not simply as decoration, but as a form of visual kui - an endless melody of the steppe translated into pattern and material.
Inspired by her great-grandmothers, who crafted syrmaks and tuskiizes, Äliyah seeks to restore the sacred signficance of craftsmanship in the digital age. Her work is both a dialogue with her ancestors and an exploration of identity, weaving together heritage, memory, and the enduring rhythms of nomadic aesthetics.
